At a recent year-end conference, Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Duc Thang shared insights on the challenges and achievements of the agricultural sector over the past year. He described 2025 as a tough year, marked by global instability due to trade wars and significant natural disasters in Vietnam.
The ministry adopted a proactive motto: “Discipline and responsibility, proactivity and timeliness,” leading to positive results despite adversity. After the government issued Decree No. 35/2025, the ministry implemented significant structural changes, streamlining administrative processes for citizens and businesses.
In response to the need for efficiency, the ministry reduced its structure by cutting down 45% of its general and department-level units, along with 24% of public service units. In 2025 alone, 30 out of 80 public service units were eliminated, showing real commitment to reform.
On the achievements side, the agricultural sector saw impressive growth, with an estimated increase of 3.7% to 3.92% in 2025. Exports exceeded $70 billion, with agricultural products alone accounting for over $37 billion. This remarkable figure underscores the sector’s vital role in ensuring food security and its strength as an economic pillar.
Despite these successes, challenges remain. Minister Thang noted ongoing issues with policy responsiveness, complex legal frameworks, and inadequate infrastructure for agriculture and environmental protection. Air pollution continues to be a growing concern, with Vietnam’s disaster response capabilities needing improvement.
Looking forward to 2026 and beyond, the ministry aims to strengthen resource management and legal frameworks to support sustainable growth. Key priorities include enhancing workforce skills, promoting digital transformation, and investing in a green economy. The goal is not just growth but a balanced approach to ensure environmental sustainability and social welfare.
As Vietnam navigates these complex challenges, it’s clear that a concerted effort towards innovation and cooperation will be essential for a thriving future in agriculture and environmental stewardship.
