Health authorities are sounding the alarm over a new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths in Ituri province, located in the northeast.
Just hours later, Uganda confirmed one death related to this outbreak. A Congolese man, who had traveled to Kampala, was tested posthumously for Ebola after the DRC announced its outbreak. Fortunately, health officials in Uganda have yet to identify any locally transmitted cases.
The situation is alarming, especially given the region’s ongoing security issues. Armed groups in the DRC threaten stability, complicating efforts to manage public health crises. The DRC government struggles to maintain order in the east, where valuable mineral deposits attract competing factions.
Preliminary lab results indicate that 13 of 20 tested samples were positive for the Ebola virus. Of the laboratory-confirmed cases, four individuals have died, and additional suspected cases are under investigation in Bunia, the capital of Ituri.
This outbreak is particularly concerning as it follows another Ebola bout that ended just five months ago, which left 43 dead. The Africa CDC warns that the current outbreak could spread quickly, driven by heavy population movement and ongoing security challenges.
To address this, health authorities from the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan are convening for urgent meetings, along with UN agencies and other international partners. They aim to enhance surveillance and response strategies in border areas.
In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also closely monitoring the situation. Acting Director Jay Bhattacharya noted that the agency is offering technical support to both DRC and Uganda. He emphasized the CDC’s extensive experience in managing Ebola outbreaks.
Ebola was first recognized in 1976, believed to have started with bats. It’s a highly contagious disease, spreading through direct contact with bodily fluids and leading to severe symptoms like bleeding and organ failure. The DRC has experienced multiple outbreaks, with the deadliest occurring from 2018 to 2020, claiming nearly 2,300 lives.
Given the ongoing violence in the DRC, public health efforts become increasingly challenging. Recently, an attack by armed rebels resulted in at least 69 deaths in Ituri. The DRC government is still working to regain control of the situation, especially after recent advances by the M23 rebel group, which has strained a fragile ceasefire.
