Recently, an adult traveler at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was confirmed to have measles. This incident happened on October 13, 2025. This particular case is separate from previous local outbreaks this year. Public health officials reported three other cases related to travelers through King County. In total, Washington State has seen 11 cases of measles this year. Interestingly, nationwide, there have been over 1,500 cases, which is significantly higher than last year’s figures.
Dr. Sandra J. Valenciano, Health Officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County, emphasized the growing concern. “We are witnessing a resurgence of measles in the U.S. Fortunately, the measles vaccine is highly effective. Two doses of the MMR vaccine can offer about 97% protection,” she stated. The vaccine has been in use for over 50 years and is considered safe.
Measles is especially contagious. A person can spread the virus even before showing symptoms, like a rash, which typically appears 7 to 21 days after exposure. Because the measles virus can linger in the air for up to two hours, it’s essential to be aware of potential exposure times.
If you were at the airport during the affected times, check your vaccination history. Most people in this area have some protection against measles, but if you start feeling unwell with fever or an unexplained rash, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Remember, it’s important to call them first if you suspect measles to avoid spreading it to others.
Complications from measles can be severe. They include ear infections, diarrhea, and pneumonia. Those most at risk are young children, adults over 20, pregnant individuals, and anyone with a weakened immune system.
