Srinagar: Indian students in Iran are feeling scared and anxious following new airstrikes in Urmia. Two student associations voiced their concerns, highlighting the stress among those stranded in this conflict zone.
Just 300 meters from their dormitories, a recent strike shook the buildings. Nasir Khuehami, a representative from the Jammu & Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), described the chaos. “The force of the explosion was intense. Students are living in constant worry, hearing fighter jets almost every hour,” he said.
On February 23, the Indian Embassy in Tehran urged all citizens, including students, to leave Iran immediately using any available transport, such as commercial flights. Roughly 1,200 Indian students are currently facing this crisis, many of whom are studying MBBS. They are stuck as military actions intensified, particularly after the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following strikes by Israel and the United States.
Adding to their distress, many students have upcoming exams. Scheduled for March 5, the Uloompaya examination is crucial, but authorities have not postponed it. The JKSA has called on External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar for urgent action to help relocate these students to safer places until a full evacuation can occur.
Concerns are particularly high among families of students from Kashmir, who are closely monitoring the situation. They’re worried for their loved ones’ safety and are asking for help in securing evacuation plans. Dr. Mohammad Momin Khana, president of the All India Medical Students’ Association, echoed these calls for action, urging authorities to move students away from danger.
As the conflict escalates, the stakes grow higher. Recent reports indicate that missile and drone attacks from Iran in retaliation against US and Israeli targets could lead to further regional instability. The current situation underscores the urgent need for effective communication and support for those affected.
