The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for certain ready-to-eat beef jerky products from Top Notch Jerky, LLC, located in Sugar City, Idaho. These products were found to have plastic contamination, raising significant health concerns. Contaminated food poses serious risks such as choking, injury, or illness.
Consumers reported finding plastic in these beef jerky products, which led to the alert. However, a recall was not issued since the products are no longer for sale.
The affected products were available online and distributed across the U.S., including Puerto Rico. Two specific items were noted:
- Riverbend Ranch Original Beef Stick – 6.9 oz bags containing 6 x 1.15 oz sticks, best by 11/27/2026
- Riverbend Ranch Jalapeno Beef Stick – same size and packaging as the original
If you have these products at home, check your pantry. It’s important to stop using them, even if they look fine. Consumers should avoid selling or donating these items and should reach out to the company for refunds or returns. Disposal of the products is highly recommended.
So far, there have been no reported injuries related to these products. However, Ron Simon & Associates, a prominent food poisoning law firm, advises anyone who has consumed the affected products and feels unwell to consult a healthcare provider right away.
Medical experts warn that food contaminated with plastic can severely impact health, possibly leading to choking or internal damage. Vulnerable groups like infants, the elderly, and those recovering from surgery are especially at risk. The FDA outlines various health hazards associated with ingesting foreign objects.
Consumer vigilance is crucial in these cases. Regularly checking food products can help prevent potential health risks. Stay informed and prioritize your safety.
