The Indian government has recently urged oil marketing companies to increase LPG production. This move comes in response to supply disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, now in its seventh day. The war has affected cargo movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipping that accounts for nearly 20% of the world’s crude supply.
In India, about 85% of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports pass through this narrow waterway. With these imports threatened, the government issued an emergency order under the Essential Commodities Act of 1955 to stabilize domestic supplies.
This order mandates that oil refiners maximize their LPG output. They are required to use all available propane and butane solely for LPG production. The refined gas must be supplied exclusively to three major public sector companies: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL).
Interestingly, the order also prohibits refiners from using these gases to produce petrochemicals or other products, emphasizing the need to focus on LPG instead. This is a significant step to ensure that consumers continue to receive cooking gas without interruption.
According to recent reports, demand for LPG has increased, with a 6% rise in household usage over the last year. This trend highlights the growing reliance on LPG in Indian kitchens, where it is often preferred for its efficiency and convenience.
