Stakeholders in the environmental sector are pushing the National Assembly to quickly pass the Environmental, Social, and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) Bill. This appeal came during the Global Climate Action Day (#DrawTheLine) in Abuja, Nigeria, which centered on climate justice.

DrawTheLine is part of a global campaign advocating for justice for individuals and the planet. Dr. Michael David, Executive Director of the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation, emphasized that getting the ESHIA Bill approved is crucial for safeguarding communities and the environment. He highlighted that debt cancellation could help countries like Nigeria focus on sustainable practices.

David stated, “Our future should not be sacrificed for corporate profits. Only engaged citizens can shape a just future for the coming generations.” He called for collective action against climate injustice, environmental degradation, and the struggles faced by vulnerable communities.

He also pointed out, “The climate clock shows we have less than three years to act before we face irreversible damage.” It’s vital that public funds are directed toward sustainable futures for everyone, especially for those hit hard by climate impacts.

John Makina, Oxfam’s Country Director, who spoke after a road walk, noted that Oxfam supports the campaign to address climate issues in vulnerable African nations. Dr. Kenneth Akpan represented him, emphasizing the importance of addressing silent issues around climate change, poverty, and gender justice.

Makina pledged Oxfam’s commitment to providing training and resources necessary to amplify the campaign’s goals. He also urged state governments to implement their own policies addressing climate change.

Involving youth is another key aspect of this movement. Francisca Edeh, Project Coordinator for Oxfam Youth Ambassadors, stressed that young people are vital in the fight for climate justice. He urged policymakers to include youth voices in important climate discussions.

According to a recent survey, over 70% of young adults believe climate change directly impacts their lives and future.
