The All India Seafarers Union has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help in rescuing Indian seafarers stranded in the Persian Gulf amid rising tensions due to the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran. Many are currently stuck in dangerous areas, facing serious risks and shortages of essential supplies.
As of March 9, around 1,100 Indian sailors are trapped on 37 to 38 Indian-flagged vessels in the Gulf and surrounding waters. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has worsened their situation. Some reports suggest that up to 23,000 Indian sailors might be in the wider region, with most working on foreign ships.
Families from states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Kerala are growing increasingly anxious. They are posting emotional appeals on social media, seeking news of their loved ones who lack communication and safety assurances. Sanjay V Pawar, the union president, emphasizes that recent attacks on ships have created a perilous environment at sea.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, the union highlighted the dire conditions faced by seafarers. Many vessels in ports like Bandar Abbas and Sirri Island are reporting communication failures, supply shortages, and threats from missiles and drones. Moreover, the impact of sanctions is preventing sailors from receiving their wages, adding to their stress.
Pawar pointed to the lack of war risk insurance as a major issue, with some insurance providers withholding assistance due to the escalating conflict. This situation has led to growing fears among families about the safety of their loved ones, particularly with reports of seafarers being close to combat zones.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has been closely monitoring the situation. They have established a dedicated Quick Response Team to assist seafarers. They are ensuring that safety protocols are strictly followed and 24/7 emergency contacts are available for companies operating in the region.
India ranks third globally in supplying seafarers, accounting for about 12% of the world’s maritime workforce. The commitment of these sailors is vital to global trade, making their safe return a priority.
