KANSAS CITY, Mo. — This past Monday, the Pet Resource Clinic hosted an emergency pet food pantry that was a huge success. Around 150 cars showed up, and the clinic distributed over 10,000 pounds of pet food and cat litter.
Madison Brown, the clinic’s marketing director, noted, “The need is pretty big. We had about 200 families reach out just through email.” Even more contacted them via social media or in person.
While the clinic regularly holds a pet food pantry twice a month, this was their first emergency event. “We have done this before, but never on this scale,” Brown explained. Many pet owners have said they’ll prioritize feeding their pets over themselves amid the current economic struggles. Some even expressed concerns about having to give up their pets due to financial stress.
This pantry helps keep pets in their homes. Brown said, “We hear so many stories from people thinking about rehoming their animals.” Providing food makes a significant difference.
On the day of the pantry, cars were lined up more than two hours early. Some even took public transport to get there. Brown emphasized that they distributed food without asking any questions, making it easier for families in need.
Community members were grateful. One pet owner, Connie, brought her dog Sassy along. “I’m just thrilled to be here tonight because this is really going to help us out,” she shared. Sassy, now four years old, is very much part of Connie’s family.
This initiative sheds light on a growing issue. According to recent statistics from the Human Animal Bond Research Institute, about 24% of pet owners in the U.S. have considered rehoming their pets due to financial challenges. In tough times, programs like this can make a world of difference.
