The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) is urging the Federal Government to create policies that would ensure supermarkets are required to redirect the money they earn from plastic bag charges into climate initiatives.
At a recent youth climate event in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, NCF Director-General Dr. Joseph Onoja advocated for this change. He highlighted that climate change is already impacting Nigeria’s environment, harming farmlands, waterways, and coastal areas. His message was clear: a stronger commitment to climate action is needed, especially regarding plastic waste.
While some supermarkets and restaurants have started to charge for plastic bags, there isn’t a formal guideline for how these funds should be used. “These charges shouldn’t just be a way for businesses to make money. They should support climate financing or sustainability projects,” Onoja explained. He stressed that Nigeria, which is part of the Paris Agreement, needs policies that align with long-term climate solutions.
The event also commemorated the Ford Foundation’s 65th anniversary. NCF’s Climate Change Lead, Shittu Usman, spoke about how climate change affects agriculture and increases the frequency of wildfires, linking these issues to global warming.
Young voices were also significant at the event. Kasheen Abdulrasheed from Community Junior High School called for youth to take action by reducing plastic waste. Elizabeth Lawal from Magbon Alade Junior Grammar School urged lawmakers to halt deforestation, protect natural forests and oceans, and enforce stricter waste disposal regulations.
This push for change reflects a broader trend among youth advocating for environmental sustainability. Recent surveys show that young people are increasingly alert to climate change and want to see real action.
