Urgent: Deadly Listeria Outbreak Tied to Chicken Alfredo Fettuccine at Kroger and Walmart – What You Need to Know

A recent listeria outbreak has caused serious health concerns, including three reported deaths and one pregnancy loss. This outbreak is linked to heat-and-eat chicken fettuccine alfredo products sold at Kroger and Walmart.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the outbreak has affected at least 17 individuals across 13 states since last July. Out of those, 16 people were hospitalized. The food producer, FreshRealm, is recalling products made before June 17, including:

– 32.8-ounce trays of Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo
– 12.3-ounce trays of Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with broccoli
– 12.5-ounce trays of Home Chef Chicken Fettucine Alfredo

The listeria strain that caused this outbreak was detected during a routine inspection in March, though the specific source of the contamination remains unknown. Cases have been reported in multiple states including Florida, Illinois, and Texas.

Despite the recall, officials are worried that the problem may persist, as they continue to receive illness reports linked to these products. The CDC emphasizes that listeria can be particularly dangerous for older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and confusion.

Statistics reveal that around 1,600 people in the U.S. become ill from listeria each year, resulting in about 260 fatalities. In response to past outbreaks, federal agencies have committed to improving food safety protocols. These efforts are crucial, given the alarming health risks associated with listeria outbreaks.
