Urgent Flood Alert: Four Northern Districts Brace for Impact

Low-lying areas in four northern districts of Bangladesh could face flooding due to heavy rainfall, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC). The Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers are expected to rise over the next two days, affecting Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, and Lalmonirhat.

The Ganges basin is also likely to see increased water levels from continued rainfall over the next five days. However, the FFWC does not anticipate flooding in that region.

All four maritime ports in Bangladesh continue to fly signal number three as the Bay of Bengal remains turbulent. A weather depression that affected parts of the country has weakened and shifted towards Jharkhand.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) predicts rain in most areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Khulna today. Recently, Tarash in Rajshahi reported the highest rainfall at 145 mm, while Dhaka recorded 41 mm.

Although some regions like Feni and Noakhali are still dealing with residual floodwater, the situation is improving as rainfall tapers off. This year’s monsoon arrived earlier than usual, delivering ample moisture.

The BMD suggests that rain activity may pick up again toward the end of the week. Interestingly, 54 out of 127 water level gauging stations registered rising water levels in the last 24 hours, highlighting the ongoing weather challenges.

According to the Global Flood Detection System, Bangladesh experiences heavy monsoons every year, but changes in climate have made flooding more unpredictable. A study from the International Center for Climate Change and Development shows that flooding has increased by 20% over the past decade, affecting agriculture and livelihoods.

As we navigate these weather patterns, it’s crucial to stay informed and prepared.
