Urgent Focus: TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee Advocates for Dialogue with Pakistan Centered on Reclaiming PoK

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, currently in Malaysia with an all-party parliamentary team, stated that future talks with Pakistan should solely focus on reclaiming Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). He emphasized the ongoing conflict, saying, “For decades, we’ve been in discussions with Pakistan, regardless of the government in place. Yet, the conflict remains unresolved.”

Banerjee highlighted the recent tragic attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead due to their religion and gender. He insisted that without specific dialogue about PoK, terrorism will persist. “The only conversation we should have is about reclaiming our land,” he said.

The Indian government has consistently maintained that discussions with Pakistan will revolve around terrorism and PoK. Members of the delegation, including JDU’s Sanjay Jha, outlined the history of cross-border terrorism affecting India, especially focusing on the recent events in Pahalgam.

During their visit, they reached out to the Indian diaspora, encouraging them to share their experiences and voices against terrorism. The diaspora, including members from the Malaysian Indian Muslim community, supported India’s stance and condemned the attacks.

Banerjee pointed out that India waited two weeks after the Pahalgam attack for Pakistan to respond and take action. When there was no progress, India executed precision strikes against terrorist bases within Pakistan. He stated, “We have evidence. Pictures of Pakistani officials at terrorists’ funerals are all over social media. What more proof does the world need?”

He also urged the diaspora to visit Kashmir, highlighting how local tourism could aid the economy. “These attacks aim to paralyze us, but we must make Kashmir flourish. Your support can make a difference,” he said.

Banerjee acknowledged that Indians abroad often express their patriotism with more pride than those at home, stating, “People far from India show deep nationalistic feelings. We’re not looking for violence, but we won’t tolerate terrorism anymore.”

The delegation paid tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a key figure in India’s fight for independence. They are part of a larger effort, visiting over 33 countries to raise awareness about Pakistan’s ties to terrorism.

It’s important to note that the current situation draws parallels to past events, such as the 1965 Indo-Pak war, where territorial disputes fueled tensions. The ongoing discourse about Kashmir remains central to India’s foreign policy and security strategy.

According to a 2021 survey by Pew Research, a significant portion of the Indian population views Pakistan as the biggest threat to national security, indicating ongoing concerns about cross-border terrorism and its implications.

Overall, the dialogue around reclaiming PoK and addressing terrorism continues to resonate strongly, especially among those engaged with the Indian diaspora.
