Fork Food Lab is a popular kitchen space and incubator for food businesses in South Portland. However, it’s now facing foreclosure. A public auction is scheduled for January 28, which could mean big changes for the facility.
The property at 95-97 Darling Ave. is currently owned by Norway Savings Bank. Fork Food Lab moved here from Portland in 2023 to grow its operations, but financial challenges have put its future at risk.
Bill Seretta, the Executive Director, stated in an email that they are working hard to create a financial plan to keep the facility open. “We are actively engaging with our lenders to finalize an agreement soon,” he said.
Chef Klajdi Plaku, who runs the vegan charcuterie company Mad Flavor, expressed concern but remains hopeful. “It’s tough, but I believe they are trying hard to fix things. We all want to keep working from here.”
The lab has over 80 member businesses. If Fork Food Lab closes, many could struggle to find a new location. Plaku mentioned that it would be difficult to find a kitchen with the same resources, like high-quality vacuum sealers and combi ovens.
Launched in 2016, Fork Food Lab began in a smaller space in Portland. In 2018, it faced closure but was saved by a nonprofit partnership led by Seretta. The lab then moved to its current 42,000-square-foot facility in South Portland after purchasing it for $5.9 million.
The lab has helped many local food entrepreneurs, from gourmet whoopie pie makers to vegan food trucks. Its unique setup provides access to essential equipment and a community that encourages innovation.
Experts say that shared kitchen spaces are vital for small food businesses, especially in a competitive market.
