Parkgoers at Swan Creek Metropark have noticed bright red-and-white warning signs urging people to avoid wading, swimming, or fishing in the creek. Many aren’t surprised by the alerts, especially after heavy rainfall. Monique Embery shared, “With all the rain and runoff, it’s something commonly seen in our parks and rivers.”
Testing conducted by the city showed that E. coli levels were particularly concerning downstream. Chris, another park visitor, expressed his worries: “It’s alarming that our water systems have harmful bacteria. It could lead to serious health issues.”
The advisory affects Swan Creek and its tributaries from Eastgate to the Maumee River. Many locals, including Chris, are concerned about the health risks for their families and pets.
The spike in E. coli levels followed a sewer line break that caused two significant sinkholes in the area. Embery hopes for quicker resolutions, saying, “I wish they could ensure the water is safer for everyone, including wildlife. A petition would be great to rally support on this issue, as many share these concerns.”
