Recently, the Dilley Family Residential Center in South Texas has been hit by a serious measles outbreak. Immigration attorney Eric Lee shared that at least two cases have been confirmed, following extensive public concerns about the conditions at the facility.
Lee, who gained attention for documenting protests at the center, revealed that around 1,200 detainees, including over 400 children, are currently held there. Families face harsh conditions that include spoiled food and contaminated drinking water, raising serious health risks.
One alarming incident described by Lee involved a child who experienced appendicitis but initially received inadequate care. He was eventually hospitalized after showing severe symptoms. Such cases highlight the pressing need for better medical attention and living conditions in these detention facilities.
At a press conference, Congressman Joaquin Castro brought attention to the plight of a two-month-old baby held at Dilley for several days. This situation is particularly concerning since measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. as of 2000. However, a recent report from the University of Chicago Medicine notes that rising misinformation about vaccinations has led to a resurgence in measles cases across certain areas, with over 1,000 new infections reported by May 2025.
Statistics show that most measles fatalities worldwide occur in unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children under five. The Centers for Disease Control emphasizes that enclosed spaces like detention centers can dramatically amplify infection spread due to close living conditions.
As we continue to follow this story, it becomes clear that the wellbeing of children in such facilities is at high risk. Authorities must prioritize their health and safety to prevent outbreaks and ensure humane treatment.
