Terra Medi LLC, based in Long Island City, NY, has issued a recall for Hellas Meze Golden Smoked Whole Herring due to improper evisceration. This means the fish have not been thoroughly cleaned, which can lead to health risks.

In New York, selling uneviscerated fish is against state regulations. This is important because Clostridium botulinum spores, responsible for botulism poisoning, are often found in the fish’s guts. This recall came after inspections by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which identified the products as unsafe for consumption.
