Tragic Shooting of Baby Girl in Brooklyn
A heartbreaking incident unfolded recently in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, when a baby girl was shot while out with her mother. The seven-month-old, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was in a stroller when gunfire erupted at around 1 p.m. on Wednesday. The chaos sent people running for cover as her family sought safety in a nearby bodega.
Kaori’s father quickly rushed her to Woodhull Hospital, but sadly, she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her two-year-old brother, grazed by a bullet, is okay but the family is understandably devastated.
Police have arrested 21-year-old Amuri Greene, believed to be the gunman. He will face charges including murder. Greene is currently recovering from a broken leg sustained during an attempted getaway on a moped, which ended in a crash. The second suspect, who drove the moped, is still at large, and while police know his identity, they haven’t released it yet.
This shooting is being investigated as possible gang-related violence. Reports suggest that Kaori’s father might have been the intended target due to an ongoing dispute with a rival gang. Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny confirmed Greene’s connection to a local street gang.
The family, grappling with their loss, is seeking answers. Kaori’s grandmother, Linda Oyinkoinyan, expressed her heartbreak: “I call her my little baby angel,” she lamented. The family’s anguish is further echoed by their neighbors, who are calling for peace and safety in the area. Local residents have reacted strongly, with some expressing a willingness to take matters into their own hands in the wake of this tragedy.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the community, emphasizing that every child deserves to grow up free from violence. “Every parent in this city deserves to know their children are safe,” he stated.
In a show of solidarity, local leaders announced a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the capture of the second suspect.
Incidents like this aren’t new. In 2021, gun violence in New York City reached alarmingly high levels, prompting discussions about public safety and community protection. Recent statistics show a 10% increase in shootings from the previous year, highlighting an ongoing crisis that affects families like Kaori’s.
As the investigation unfolds, the community continues to grieve and seek justice for a young life lost too soon. Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline.
