BIG STONE GAP, Va. — A high school football coach in Virginia has gone missing amid serious allegations. Travis L. Turner, 46, is wanted on five counts each of possessing child sexual abuse material and soliciting a minor online, according to Virginia State Police.
The police were initially trying to talk to Turner at his home last Thursday as part of an investigation. Upon arrival, they found he was no longer there. Since then, searches have involved drones and rescue teams. As of now, there’s no word on his whereabouts.
Turner is the head coach at Union High School in Wise County, leading the team to an impressive 12-win streak this season as they prepare for a regional playoff. Before coaching, Turner was a standout quarterback at Appalachia High School, which later merged into Union High. His father, Tom Turner, also a former coach, was honored in the Virginia High School Hall of Fame.
Turner’s past includes playing in the Virginia Tech recruiting class of 1998 alongside NFL player Michael Vick. He also played at the University of Virginia Wise.
In response to this situation, Jason Edwards has stepped in as interim head coach. Players are now focusing on how to handle this sudden change. Senior running back Keith Chandler mentioned the team’s need to stick together during tough times.
School officials confirmed Turner has been on administrative leave but provided no details about when that began. The investigation is ongoing, and further comments are limited due to legal constraints.
