Pope Leo XIV recently urged governments to strengthen regulations against climate change. His call echoes the messages of Pope Francis, especially as we mark the 10th anniversary of the influential encyclical, Laudato Si.
Published in 2015, Laudato Si emphasized the Church’s moral responsibility to face environmental issues. Pope Francis described the Earth’s condition as “an immense pile of filth,” highlighting the pressing need for action.
During a speech at the Raising Hope conference near Rome, Leo praised his predecessor’s impact but reminded attendees that climate challenges are more urgent today. He referred to a 2023 apostolic exhortation from Francis, noting how divisive climate change discussions have become. This document criticized those who dismiss the clear signs of climate change.
Leo pointed out that protecting the environment is crucial to the Catholic faith. He stressed that effective solutions require major political decisions, not just individual efforts. “Everyone must push their governments toward tougher regulations and engage in political processes. Only then can we address the environmental damage,” he said.
Just months into his papacy, Leo is committed to fighting climate change, particularly for vulnerable communities. In July, he held a mass encouraging Catholics to act against the ongoing ecological crisis. He’s also making changes in the Vatican, aiming to make it the world’s first carbon-neutral state. Initiatives include solar energy projects and a new ecological center focused on sustainability.
Interestingly, Leo’s emphasis on climate change contrasts sharply with recent U.S. political trends. The Trump administration has rolled back numerous environmental protections and even withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement. Although Secretary of Energy Chris Wright acknowledged climate change as real, he downplayed its urgency, claiming other priorities, like artificial intelligence, hold more significance.
Public sentiment also reflects this divide. A recent survey from the Pew Research Center found that about 70% of Americans believe climate change is a serious issue. Yet, political action remains fragmented, with clear divisions between advocates for environmental policies and those who prioritize economic growth over regulation.
As our understanding of climate change continues to evolve, the urgency of addressing it resonates across religious, political, and social arenas. Pope Leo XIV’s call to action not only seeks policy reform but aims to inspire individuals and communities to engage in this vital dialogue.
