The head of the Indian Youth Congress, Uday Bhanu Chib, recently reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. He expressed urgent concerns about the safety of Indian medical students in Iran amid escalating violence in the country.
Iran has been facing significant turmoil due to its troubled economy, leading to protests that have tragically claimed the lives of at least ten people. Chib is calling for government action to ensure the safety of these students and to provide reassurance to their families back home.
“In light of the growing risks for Indian medical students studying there, I’ve urged immediate steps from the government,” Chib stated. He emphasized, “Their safety shouldn’t be left to chance. The Indian Youth Congress is committed to supporting all Indian students abroad.”
The protests in Iran have intensified, marking the largest public outcry since the 2022 events surrounding Mahsa Amini’s death. Amini, a 22-year-old woman, died in police custody after being detained for not adhering to the country’s strict hijab laws.
Recent surveys show that a significant number of Indian students are now reconsidering their education abroad due to safety concerns. According to a 2023 report by the Global Education Monitoring Report, 54% of students in affected areas worry about their safety while studying overseas.
