Urgent Recall: Cabot Creamery Butter Linked to Fecal Contamination – What You Need to Know

Cabot Creamery is recalling over 1,700 pounds of its sea-salted Extra Creamy Premium Butter due to concerns about bacteria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that testing found elevated levels of coliform bacteria in the product, which can come from animal and human waste.

This recall involves 189 cases, or 1,701 pounds, of butter. The affected butter was sold in seven states: Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. Customers should look for packages with a best-by date of September 9, 2025, and the lot number 090925-055.

Cabot Creamery’s parent company, Agri-Mark, stated that only 17 packages, totaling 34 sticks of butter, were actually sold in retail locations, all within Vermont. They also reported that 99.5% of the product was removed from shelves before reaching customers. Thankfully, there have been no complaints or illnesses related to this butter.

The FDA classified this as a Class III recall, indicating that the health risk to consumers is low. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), coliform bacteria are commonly found in our environment, including in soil and water. Generally, these bacteria are not harmful, and they typically do not cause illness.

Despite the low risk, it’s always best to stay safe. While the company didn’t provide specific advice for consumers, the recommendation with similar recalls would be to dispose of the affected product.

Recent surveys show that food safety issues are top of mind for consumers. A 2022 study revealed that 73% of people worry about contamination in food products. This highlights the importance of companies like Cabot actively monitoring their products and responding quickly to potential safety issues.
