HiPP Baby Food Recall: What You Need to Know
HiPP, a popular baby food brand, is recalling certain jars sold in Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic due to safety concerns. Authorities discovered that some 190-gram jars of baby food, made with carrots and potatoes for infants as young as five months, tested positive for rat poison.
This tampering was first detected in samples tested on Saturday. HiPP has clarified that the products left their facility in good condition, emphasizing that this is a case of criminal activity, now under investigation.
The Burgenland Police in Austria have issued a warning about these specific jars, which may feature a white sticker with a red circle at the bottom. They also advised consumers to look out for any signs of tampering, such as a damaged or opened lid, an unusual smell, or a missing popping sound when the jar is opened.
As a precaution, HiPP is recalling all affected jars from SPAR supermarkets—including SPAR, EUROSPAR, INTERSPAR, and Maximarkt. Customers can return the jars for a full refund, even without a receipt. Retailers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic have also removed these products from their shelves.
Interestingly, the detected rat poison often contains bromadiolone, which can pose serious health risks if ingested. This anticoagulant can lead to symptoms such as bleeding gums, nosebleeds, and even bruising. Symptoms may take a few days to appear, making this situation particularly concerning for parents.
