M.C.I. Foods Recalls Breakfast Burritos Due to Listeria Risk
M.C.I. Foods Inc. is recalling over 90,000 pounds of ready-to-eat breakfast burritos and wraps because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This recall affects about 91,585 pounds of products made between September 17 and October 14.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a Class I recall, which signifies a serious health risk. Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported so far.
The affected burritos and wraps, shipped nationwide, bear establishment numbers “EST. 1162A” or “P-5890A” on their packaging. The contamination was discovered during routine testing of the scrambled egg component.
Consumers are advised to dispose of any recalled products. Institutions and schools using these items should check their stock. Notably, brands like Los Cabos, El Más Fino, and Midamar, which are part of school lunch programs, are included in the recall.
Listeria monocytogenes can lead to a serious infection called listeriosis. It particularly threatens older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, and confusion, sometimes with gastrointestinal issues. Luckily, listeriosis is treatable with antibiotics.
