Urgent Recall: Popular Bread at Kroger and Walmart Pulled in 12 States Due to Allergen Concerns

Hartford Bakery Inc. has recalled its Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style half-loaf bread. This recall affects about 883 units across 12 states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Alabama, due to a packaging error that allowed hazelnuts to be included without proper labeling.

The issue began when a batch of hazelnut bread was accidentally mixed with a white loaf variant. Instead of a clear “contains hazelnuts” label, the packaging only stated “May Contain Tree Nuts.” This oversight is significant since hazelnuts are a common allergen. As a result, anyone allergic to hazelnuts could face serious allergic reactions.

The recalled loaves have lot codes T10 174010206, T10 174010306, T10 174010406, T10 174020206, T10 174020306, and T10 174020406. They come in 12 oz plastic bags with a UPC of 24126018152 and an expiration date of 07/13/2025.

Hartford Bakery, based in West Hartford, Connecticut, has already removed products from affected lots from store shelves. Though they have received reports of visible hazelnuts and one case of digestive discomfort, thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported.

Food recalls are not uncommon. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), millions of food items are recalled every year due to potential health risks. Allergens are a primary concern; in fact, the FDA reported that between 2004 and 2018, allergens were the cause of around 29% of food recalls.
