Urgent Recall: Popular Cheese Products in the UK Linked to Listeria Contamination – What You Need to Know

The Food Standards Agency in the UK, along with JOD Food Products from Kilmallock, Limerick, has recalled various cheese products. This is due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacterium. Listeria can cause serious infections, especially in vulnerable groups like young children, pregnant women, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems.

Details about how the contamination was discovered haven’t been shared. However, JOD Food Products will post notices at the stores where these items were sold.

Reports suggest the affected cheeses were available in Tesco and Spar supermarkets across the UK. If you have purchased these products, here are the ones to be aware of:

  • Spar Old Irish Creamery Cheddar with Chilli, 150 g, Best Before: May 25, 2025
  • Horgans Irish Smoked Cheddar, 150 g, Best Before: May 25, 2025
  • Old Irish Creamery Cheese Irish Cheddar with Red Wine, sizes 150 g and 1.2 kg, Best Before: May 1, 2025, May 4, 2025
  • Old Irish Creamery Cheese Irish Cheddar with Sriracha, 150 g, Best Before: May 15, 2025, May 20, 2025, May 29, 2025
  • Various other cheeses, including those with herbs, spices, and unique flavorings with varying best before dates through 2025.

If you have any of these cheeses, it’s important to stop using them. Even if they seem fine, Listeria can be dangerous. Discard the cheese or return it to the store for a full refund. Make sure to clean any surfaces or utensils that came into contact with these products.

There haven’t been any reported illnesses linked to this recall so far. However, Listeriosis, the disease caused by Listeria, can be severe. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, confusion, and in pregnant individuals, it could lead to more serious outcomes. If you feel unwell or experience symptoms, reach out to your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
