BEND, Ore. — Two hikers recently found themselves in a tough situation in the Badlands Wilderness Area, east of Bend. They ran out of food and water, got lost, and one of them faced a medical issue. Luckily, help arrived just in time.
It was around 2:40 p.m. when the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office got the call. Deputies and Search & Rescue (SAR) volunteers quickly sprang into action. The hikers, who started their trek on the Flatiron Rock Trail, were about four miles from the trailhead when they realized they needed help.
Deputy Josh Westfall was the first to reach them, arriving at 4:30 p.m. He brought along food and water, followed by a dozen SAR volunteers with more supplies. The hikers were guided back to safety but chose not to seek further medical attention.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of outdoor activity. According to the American Hiking Society, over 50% of hikers get lost at least once while out on trails. Being prepared can make all the difference. Here are some essential safety tips:
- Always carry a map, especially since cell service can be spotty in remote areas.
- Pack extra food and water to ensure you have more than enough.
- Wear suitable footwear that matches the terrain you’ll be hiking on.
- Inform someone about your plans and expected return time in case of emergencies.
“Proper preparation can make the difference between a safe outing and a dangerous emergency,” said Jason Carr, Public Information Officer for the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
This event highlights the necessity of being vigilant when exploring nature. In recent surveys, nearly 40% of outdoor enthusiasts admit to feeling unprepared for unexpected challenges. So, whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a beginner, taking a few simple precautions can ensure a more enjoyable and safe adventure.
