Urgent UN Alert: The Rising Threat of ‘Weaponized Hunger’ in Gaza as Death Toll Climbs Amid Food Crisis

Speaking to reporters in Deir al Balah, Jonathan Whittall from the UN’s humanitarian office highlighted a grave situation. He said people in Gaza are facing a “death sentence” just to survive amid ongoing conflict. Since Israel eased its blockade last month, over 400 individuals have tragically died trying to reach food distribution points.

Whittall noted a disturbing pattern: Israeli forces firing on crowds gathering for food. Many of these areas are militarized, and people have also been shot while trying to protect aid convoys. Whittall stated, “It shouldn’t be this way. There shouldn’t be a death toll for accessing essentials.”

Conditions in Gaza are worsening. Water sources are drying up or located in unsafe areas, sanitation systems are failing, and disease is spreading quickly. “Our warehouses stand empty,” Whittall said, emphasizing that displaced families have nothing, while humanitarian agencies lack resources to help.

Hospitals are overwhelmed by continuous mass casualty events. Some facilities have been damaged, and others are limited by fuel shortages and evacuation orders. According to UNICEF, over 110 children are hospitalized for malnutrition each day. Whittall insisted that humanitarian efforts could reach every family, but they face severe blockages. “We have a plan…yet we are stopped at every turn.”

He referred to the situation as “weaponized hunger” and “forced displacement,” framing it as a systematic effort to erase Palestinian lives from Gaza. Whittall called on the global community to act, urging for a lasting ceasefire and accountability.
