For the first time in 18 months, global temperatures surged beyond the critical 1.5°C mark above pre-industrial levels. This threshold was set during the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, where countries agreed it was a line we must not cross. Unfortunately, Copernicus, Europe’s prominent climate monitoring agency, confirms that we’ve not only crossed it but have remained above that level since then.

This rise seems to have taken a permanent turn upward, particularly after July 2023. For many years, global temperatures have flirted with this limit, driven by human activities and greenhouse gas emissions. However, a specific climatic event—the El Niño phenomenon that began in June 2023—provided an extra boost of heat, causing temperatures to peak at a shocking +1.78°C by December 2023.

Typically, El Niño increases global temperatures; however, it faded by spring 2024. Traditionally, its counterpart, La Niña, helps to cool the Earth. Yet this time, La Niña didn’t have the usual effect. Instead of cooling things down, it coincided with an upward trend in temperatures once again. By January 2025, we saw another alarming spike, reaching +1.75°C. Scientists stress that this outcome illustrates a troubling reality: natural variability can no longer counteract the rapid warming resulted from human actions.

According to a study from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), 2023 was one of the hottest years on record. They noted that 2025 is projected to continue this trend, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could rise even higher. This change not only affects weather patterns but also poses serious risks to ecosystems and human health.

The impacts are already being felt globally. For instance, social media trends show people discussing unusual weather events—freak storms, droughts, and heatwaves—more than ever. Many are expressing growing concern over what these temperature increases mean for future generations.
