BUNIA, Congo (AP) — A new outbreak of Ebola has been reported in eastern Congo’s Ituri province, with at least 80 deaths so far. Health officials are working quickly to improve screening and trace contacts to prevent the disease from spreading further. The outbreak was first announced on Friday, noting 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases.
In the capital city, Bunia, residents are understandably anxious. “Every day, people are dying,” said local resident Jean Marc Asimwe. “We bury two to three people daily.” There is uncertainty about the exact nature of the disease affecting the community.
Congo’s Health Minister, Samuel-Roger Kamba, confirmed eight laboratory cases, four of which resulted in death. Tests revealed the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a variant that has been rare in previous outbreaks. This marks Congo’s 17th Ebola outbreak since the disease emerged in the country in 1976.
Ebola is highly contagious and can spread through bodily fluids. It’s severe and often fatal, although it isn’t as common as other diseases.
The suspected starting point of this outbreak is a nurse who died at a Bunia hospital about three weeks ago. While the health minister did not confirm testing for the nurse, he noted that her symptoms suggested Ebola.
The outbreak has also crossed borders into Uganda, where an imported case was confirmed. A patient died in Kampala on May 14. Health authorities are worried about the potential for further spread, having already seen the connection between cases in Congo and neighboring countries.
Kampala resident Ismail Kigongo expressed fear over the situation, recalling the loss of his father during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I really get scared because I remember burying my father without looking at his body,” he said.
Kenya has acknowledged a moderate risk of Ebola spreading due to regional travel and has set up an Ebola preparedness team to enhance monitoring efforts.
Congo faces significant logistical hurdles in managing outbreaks. As Africa’s second-largest country, it presents challenges in delivering aid and resources to remote areas often affected by conflict. Ituri province, for instance, is about 620 miles from the capital and is plagued by violence from armed groups.
So far, Ebola has been confirmed in three health zones within Ituri, including Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongwalu. Testing has been limited; only 13 blood samples were examined, and 8 tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain.
Despite the outbreak, daily life in Bunia appears to continue normally. Business owner Adeline Awekonimungu hopes the government takes swift action. “They need to take this seriously and manage hospitals effectively to control this outbreak,” she said.
Ebola outbreaks in Congo have seen varied responses over the years. History shows that swift action and community education can significantly reduce spread. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the importance of prompt identification and isolation of cases in limiting outbreaks.
