Labubu dolls have taken the toy world by storm, creating a buzz among collectors and kids alike. These cute figures are inspired by characters from Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung’s book, “The Monsters Trilogy.” Retailing for under $30, they can even fetch quite a bit more for rare versions.
Recently, however, the popularity of Labubus has led to a troubling rise in counterfeit versions known as Lafufus. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued an urgent safety warning about these knockoffs. They pose serious risks to children, including choking hazards. Some of these fakes are small enough to fit into a child’s mouth, leading to potential airway blockages. Moreover, poorly made fakes can break into smaller pieces, further increasing the choking risk.
CPSC Acting Chairman Peter Feldman made it clear: “These fake Labubu dolls are dangerous, illegal, and have no place in American homes.” He urged parents to buy only from reputable sellers to ensure their children’s safety.
To help spot a fake Lafufu, the CPSC recommends looking for certain features. Authentic Labubus should come with a holographic Pop Mart sticker and a scannable QR code. Newer models might also have a discrete UV stamp on one foot. Additionally, check the number of teeth—real Labubus have nine, while fakes may differ. A brighter color can also indicate a counterfeit.
Social media trends show that collectors are actively discussing how to differentiate these dolls, fueling enthusiasm while highlighting safety concerns. According to recent surveys, 75% of consumers express worry over toy safety, especially with the rise of online shopping where counterfeit goods circulate easily.
As the toy market evolves, so does the need for buyers to stay informed. Knowing how to identify fake products not only protects children but also supports genuine creators. Collecting Labubus can be fun, but safety should always come first.
