The Gaza Strip faces an urgent threat of famine, according to food security experts. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification has raised alarms about the situation, indicating that without immediate changes, substantial starvation could occur.

Currently, nearly half a million people in Gaza are experiencing severe hunger, categorized as "catastrophic". Yet, the crisis doesn’t stop there. Over a million others are at "emergency" hunger levels. These alarming statistics reflect the dire conditions that have worsened over the past months due to a blockade by Israel that has lasted over ten weeks.

Gaza’s population, around 2.3 million, heavily relies on external aid for their survival. The blockade has severely limited the availability of food, medicine, and shelter, leaving many without adequate nutrition. The Israeli government, aiming to pressure Hamas, has insisted on a new aid system that would allow them control over how aid is distributed. Since then, Israel has vowed to dismantle Hamas, leading to devastating consequences for the Palestinian population. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification created its criteria for famine declarations in 2004 during the Somali famine. A famine is recognized when significant food shortages occur along with high rates of malnutrition and mortality. While Gaza currently meets some of these criteria, the general public desperately awaits action to alleviate their suffering.

With the situation worsening, the U.N. humanitarian office reported a doubling of children seeking treatment for malnutrition since February. As food supplies dwindle and prices skyrocket, many families are struggling to access even the basics. Farmland destruction and inaccessible water supply compounds the crisis.
