The United States surprised many by voting against a UN resolution that condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine. This marks a significant change in US policy.

The vote, which went against a resolution supported by Ukraine and European countries, put the US on the same side as Russia. This situation is particularly striking since it coincides with the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Under the Trump administration, discussions with Moscow about ending the conflict have intensified. This has led to tougher comments directed at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The UN resolution passed with support from 93 countries. It expressed deep concern over the ongoing invasion, highlighting its serious effects not only on Ukraine but also on global stability. The document called for reduced tensions and a peaceful solution to the conflict.
In contrast, the US pushed its own resolution at the General Assembly. However, this version did not label Russia as the aggressor and failed to fully recognize Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
The US resolution called for a quick end to fighting and emphasized the need for peace between Ukraine and Russia. It mourned the loss of lives caused by the conflict and reiterated the UN’s role in maintaining peace and resolving disputes.
Later that day, the US planned to present a similar resolution to the UN Security Council. Before the General Assembly vote, Ambassador Dorothy Shea encouraged all member states, including Ukraine and Russia, to support the US resolution.
She described the resolution as a straightforward message focused simply on ending the war and suggesting a possible path to peace.
Shea explained why the US chose not to support Ukraine’s resolution. She argued that it was essential to focus on uniting for peace rather than proposing multiple resolutions.
Ultimately, the US abstained from voting on its own resolution after amendments were made to strengthen the language against Russia and affirm Ukraine’s rights.
