The United States Commission of Fine Arts has greenlit a plan for a commemorative gold coin featuring a portrait of Donald Trump. This decision came during a unanimous vote by the commission, which is composed of members appointed by Trump.
There’s some debate about the legality of this move. Federal law usually prohibits images of living presidents on currency. However, this coin is pitched as a commemorative piece rather than standard currency, which could allow it to bypass those restrictions.
Critics have voiced strong objections. Senator Jeff Merkley pointed out that putting a president’s face on a coin resembles practices of monarchies or dictatorships, not democratic leaders. Moreover, a bipartisan panel, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, has previously expressed concerns about Trump-themed coins. Member Donald Scarinci noted that both the advisory panel and the Commission of Fine Arts should approve the designs, yet he expects that the minting will go ahead regardless.
The design for the coin showcases Trump leaning on a table, an image inspired by a photograph by Daniel Torok. Chamberlain Harris, a Trump aide, described it as a “strong” image. She also mentioned that the coin will be as large as possible, aiming for a size of about 7.6 centimeters, or three inches.
This initiative isn’t isolated. Since his second term began, Trump has pursued various ways to imprint his legacy on the federal government. Apart from the gold coin, there are efforts to feature his likeness on a $1 coin. Trump’s name has also been placed on significant institutions like the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Interestingly, recent surveys indicate that public opinion is divided. According to a Gallup poll, support for presidential likenesses on currency is lower than it has been in previous decades. This trend reflects a growing awareness of the implications of such acts in a democratic society.
As preparations for the U.S. 250th anniversary celebrations gain momentum, Trump’s administration argues that honoring the current president in this way is fitting. Harris stated, “It’s a celebration of our nation and the current leadership.”
