Even with the US stepping up efforts to control illegal immigration and news of deportations, many young people in Punjab and Haryana still dream of migrating to the US. Travel agents in these regions report strong interest in finding ways to reach American soil, often risking their lives in the process.
One popular but risky option is the “Dunki route.” This path involves a long journey, crossing the US-Mexico border through unauthorized areas after traveling through various countries in Africa and South America. Despite the dangers, many migrants are determined to take this chance for a shot at a better life.
Travel agent Sonu Singh from Jalandhar shared, “The demand for US visas, even through unofficial channels, is still very high. Many young people are driven by the hope of better opportunities and the American dream.”
Satnam Singh, whose brother was deported from the US, noted that people are still determined to find a way. He mentioned that his cousin recently arrived in the US with his family after navigating a complex journey that began with a Schengen visa for Spain. They then managed to get a Mexican visa before crossing into the US, with plans to apply for asylum.
Another agent, Jaswinder Singh, explained that the aspiration to migrate is largely fueled by socio-economic issues at home. “Foreign jobs and education seem more appealing compared to local struggles. Even with the threat of deportations, many are willing to take the risk,” he said.
As for other routes, some are using the Bahamas to enter the US. This journey can take over 27 hours and includes multiple layovers. There are two sea route options, but they can be perilous. Migrants are often crammed into unsafe boats, risking their lives in treacherous waters. “It’s a dangerous journey, and many don’t make it,” the agent cautioned.
In recent years, another trend has emerged where some immigrants are entering the US through Canada. Despite Canada tightening its immigration laws, many Indians continue to cross the border. From October 2020 to August 2024, US Customs reported over 86,400 Indian nationals sought to cross illegally at the US-Mexico border and over 88,800 were caught trying to enter from Canada.
Travel agents note that the Canada route is often seen as easier. Many people arrive in Canada on visitor or student visas and then attempt to slip into the US, where they can apply for asylum.
In the face of strict regulations and dangers, the lure of a better future continues to drive many youths from Punjab and Haryana to seek all possible avenues to reach the US. The challenge remains, but as long as the American dream persists, so will their determination to find their way there.
