US Dismisses Hamas Demands: What It Means for the Fragile Gaza Truce

Talks to extend the ceasefire in Gaza have hit a wall, according to a Palestinian official. As the U.S. accused Hamas of making unrealistic demands in discussions in Qatar, the situation remains tense.

Negotiators aimed to find a path forward after the first ceasefire phase wrapped up on March 1. The U.S. suggested extending the truce until mid-April, with plans for another round of hostage exchanges. However, the Palestinian official highlighted disagreements between Israel and Hamas over critical aspects of the U.S. proposal, detailed by envoy Steve Witkoff.

Israel has not publicly responded yet, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office mentioned that he would receive updates from his negotiating team soon. Meanwhile, the U.S. characterized Hamas’s demands as impractical, indicating that negotiations could lead to a prolonged conflict instead of a lasting solution.

A statement from the White House noted: "Hamas is making a very bad bet that time is on its side." It warned that if negotiations fail, consequences will follow.

Hamas has claimed that talks have collapsed, with Netanyahu’s office stating that while Israel accepted the U.S. proposal, Hamas has not budged, accusing the group of manipulation.

This current situation arose after a ceasefire agreement was reached in January following 15 months of intense conflict. In the first phase of that deal, Hamas released 25 Israeli hostages, while Israel freed around 1,800 Palestinian prisoners. The next phase was supposed to involve more exchanges, but disagreements remain, particularly concerning the release of remaining hostages.

The ongoing conflict has led to a devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Reports show that over 90% of homes have been damaged or destroyed. According to the UN, most of Gaza’s 2.1 million residents face dire living conditions, with severe shortages of food, water, and medical resources.

The violence began to escalate dramatically on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack that killed over 1,200 people in southern Israel. Following this, Israel’s military response has resulted in more than 48,520 fatalities in Gaza, predominantly among civilians, according to estimates from health officials in the region.

As the humanitarian crisis deepens, many are keenly observing how this latest breakdown in negotiations will affect the lives of ordinary citizens on both sides.
