U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright recently ordered a Texas oil and gas company, Sable Offshore Corp., to resume operations off the coast of southern California. This move comes after a significant oil spill in 2015, aimed at addressing potential disruptions in oil supply.
The Santa Ynez unit, consisting of three rigs and key pipelines, plays a crucial role. It can produce around 50,000 barrels of oil daily and would help replace nearly 1.5 million barrels of foreign crude every month. In contrast, California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized this decision. He argued that it jeopardizes coastal communities and the environment. Newsom pointed out that Sable faces criminal charges and is under multiple court orders preventing it from restarting operations. “California will not stand by while the Trump administration attempts to sacrifice our coastal communities,” he declared.
This conflict has historical roots. In January, California filed a lawsuit to challenge the federal approval for Sable’s plans. State Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized that California has the authority to regulate these pipelines, reaffirming the state’s commitment to its environmental standards.
This situation highlights the ongoing debate over energy policy in the U.S. A recent survey found that over 70% of Californians prefer strong environmental protections over increased oil production.
