The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is aiming to deport five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias. Their situation recently gained attention after they returned to Minnesota, but the DHS claims they are not seeking to expedite their removal.
Tricia McLaughlin, a DHS spokesperson, emphasized that their actions follow standard procedure. “This is not retaliatory,” she stated. The case has sparked national discussion since Liam’s detention on January 20. Photos of him in floppy blue bunny ears, clutching his Spiderman backpack while being approached by immigration agents, quickly went viral.
Liam’s preschool in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, accused immigration officials of using the child as bait for his father. Meanwhile, the DHS alleged that Adrian abandoned Liam during the encounter. Both parties are contradicting each other’s narratives about the arrest.
This situation is part of a larger crackdown on immigration in Minnesota known as Operation Metro Surge, initiated under President Donald Trump’s administration. At its peak, the operation involved about 3,000 agents. However, reports of aggressive tactics, including two recent fatal shootings of U.S. citizens by immigration agents, have raised serious concerns.
A recent survey indicated that 60% of Minnesota residents believe immigration enforcement should prioritize community safety over aggressive removals. This public sentiment may contribute to the decision to withdraw nearly 700 agents amid increasing scrutiny.
On January 27, a judge ruled that Liam and Adrian should be released while they contest their deportation. “They seek nothing more than some modicum of due process and the rule of law,” wrote Judge Fred Biery in his ruling.
Liam and his father had legally entered the U.S. from Ecuador and were in the process of seeking asylum when they were detained. Their attorney, Danielle Molliver, expressed frustration at the complications presented by DHS, speculating that the expedited removal was indeed retaliatory.
According to a 2021 report from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), similar cases have shown a trend of using aggressive tactics against vulnerable populations. Public outcry regarding these issues could lead to broader discussions about immigration policies in America.
