US Navy F-35 Crash in California: Pilot Ejects Safely – What You Need to Know

A US Navy F-35 fighter jet crashed on Wednesday evening near Naval Air Station Lemoore in central California. Fortunately, the pilot ejected safely and is unharmed. The cause of the crash, which occurred around 6:30 PM, is currently under investigation.

Footage from KFSN shows thick black smoke billowing from the crash site in flat farmland, roughly 40 miles southwest of Fresno.

Emergency crews from local EMS and Cal Fire were quick to respond. The aircraft belonged to Strike Fighter Squadron VF-125, known as the “Rough Raiders.” This squadron plays a key role in training pilots and aircrew.

The downed jet was an F-35C variant, specifically designed for carrier operations. There are three versions of the F-35: the Air Force uses the F-35A, while the Marine Corps has the F-35B, which can take off and land vertically.

This incident marks the second crash of an F-35 in 2023. Earlier in January, an Air Force F-35A went down during a training mission in Alaska, but thankfully the pilot ejected safely in that instance as well.

The F-35 is not just a military asset; it’s regarded as one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, valued at around $100 million. Manufactured by Lockheed Martin, it boasts advanced stealth and combat skills, making it vital for the US military. Currently, over 17 countries are involved in the global F-35 program.
