The U.S. Postal Service has something exciting in store for 2026. For the third year running, they’re launching new Priority Mail stamps with stunning images of the universe. This time, the stamps showcase the Crab Nebula and a pair of galaxies, bringing the majesty of space right to our mailboxes.
These stamps celebrate America’s journey into deep space, featuring breathtaking visuals from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. According to the USPS, “These new stamps celebrate America’s continued exploration of deep space.”
Priority Mail delivers packages within one to three business days. In contrast, the Crab Nebula image, displayed on the 2026 stamp, traveled an amazing 6,500 light years to reach Earth. It first caught our attention in 2023 when NASA shared the image.
Tea Temim, an astrophysicist at Princeton University, has been studying the Crab Nebula using the telescope’s advanced technology. She says, “Webb’s sensitivity helps us determine what elements were ejected during the explosion that created the nebula.” The stunning visualization of this nebula reveals intricate features previously unseen, captured in beautiful shades of red and orange.
The Priority Mail Express stamp, known for its speed—delivering packages in one to three days, even on Sundays—will feature two galaxies, IC 2163 and NGC 2207. This image shows a fascinating cosmic dance, with a hint of where the galaxies might have collided. This spectacular view, 80 million light years away, highlights the dynamic nature of our universe.
These space-themed stamps remind us of our endless curiosity and exploration. Greg Breeding, the USPS art director responsible for selecting these images, continues to bring the wonders of space into our daily lives.
The release date for these stamps is still pending approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission, which is assessing a proposed rate increase for Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express. If approved, the new rates will rise by about 6.6% and 5.1%, respectively.
