US Secretary of State: More ‘Israels’ in the Middle East Could Lead to a Safer World

After President Trump’s controversial suggestion for a Gaza “takeover,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a surprising statement during a press conference in Jerusalem. He claimed that more nations like Israel in the Middle East would make the world “safer.” This comment has sparked debate, especially since many governments, including key Western and Arab nations, have already dismissed Trump’s original idea.

Rubio’s visit to Israel marks his first as Secretary of State under Trump. He emphasized the United States’ strong support for Israel and highlighted major regional issues like Iran’s nuclear program and the situation with Hamas. He warned that Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons is a critical threat to peace in the region, stating, “There can never be a nuclear Iran.” His view is that Iran is the biggest source of instability due to its backing of militant groups throughout the Middle East.

Regarding Gaza, Rubio insisted that Hamas should not continue to operate as a military or governing body. Meanwhile, Trump has previously proposed resettling Gaza’s population to create what he calls the “Riviera of the Middle East,” an idea that has faced strong backlash for potentially leading to ethnic cleansing.

As of January 19, a ceasefire has been in place in Gaza, halting significant violence. Reports indicate that nearly 48,300 Palestinians have died, many of whom were women and children. Recently, a prisoner swap took place where nineteen Israeli captives and five Thai workers were exchanged for 1,135 Palestinian prisoners.

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is under scrutiny at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the region.
