US Senators Unveil Shrimp Tariff Act to Safeguard Louisiana’s Seafood Industry from Unfair Trade Practices by India

Washington, D.C. — Senators Bill Cassidy and Cindy Hyde-Smith have introduced the India Shrimp Tariff Act. This legislation aims to protect local shrimp and catfish farmers from what they say are unfair trade practices involving the dumping of inexpensive shrimp into the U.S. market.

Cassidy noted, “People come from all over to enjoy our Louisiana seafood. That’s because our shrimpers and catfish farmers meet high standards.” He believes this bill will help safeguard jobs in the seafood industry by creating a fairer competition environment.

Hyde-Smith also voiced her concerns, pointing out that Indian shrimp imports are causing significant challenges for U.S. fishermen. “For too long, Indian shrimp has been dumped on the U.S. market with little regulation,” she said. “This bill aims to level the playing field for everyone who relies on domestic shrimp.”

At a recent Senate Finance Committee hearing, Cassidy secured a promise from Jonathan Greenstein, a nominee for Deputy Under Secretary of the Treasury, to support Louisiana shrimp producers against unfair trade practices.

In February, Cassidy and other Republican senators introduced the Prioritizing Offensive Agricultural Disputes and Enforcement Act. This aimed at protecting the Louisiana rice industry from cheap imports from India and China. Historically, U.S. trade policies have often resulted in increased tariffs, affecting both Indian and American consumers. For instance, recent 50% tariffs raised costs for those buying Indian goods in the U.S.

Interestingly, this pattern is not unique to shrimp. Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows that shrimp and seafood imports have risen significantly over the past decade, further complicating the situation for domestic producers.

Social media reactions are mixed, with many Louisiana residents supporting the bill while others raise concerns about the potential rise in prices for consumers.
