USD Volleyball Celebrates WCC Championship Win
The atmosphere was electric at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, as the crowd of 1,103 erupted with excitement during the match against Pepperdine. Fans filled every spot in the bleachers, and they were ready to cheer for their team, the San Diego Toreros. They showed incredible support, creating a lively environment for what turned out to be a memorable night.
The Toreros didn’t waste any time showing their skills. They dominated the match, securing a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-18, 25-23) and clinching the West Coast Conference Championship. This win marked their first title since 2022. Coach Jennifer Petrie praised her team for their heart and resilience. “They wanted this,” she said proudly, noting their undefeated record in league play.
Nemo Beach led the charge with 21 kills and also contributed 11 digs. Setter Kylie Munday played a key role, finishing with 36 assists and 14 digs. Senior setter Olivia Bennett, the lone returning starter from last season’s NCAA semifinal squad, tallied an impressive 29 digs. Bennett expressed gratitude for the community support that fueled the team’s performance. “This crowd helped us thrive on the court today,” she said.
This victory not only celebrates the team’s title but also marks a significant turnaround from last year’s near miss during the selection process. With high hopes for the upcoming NCAA Tournament, the Toreros will eagerly await the announcement of their postseason standing.
Incredibly, San Diego has now secured 13 WCC Championships and has made 27 NCAA Tournament appearances. Under Coach Petrie’s leadership, the Toreros have built a strong legacy in collegiate volleyball.
