The University of Southern Indiana (USI) is teaming up with Amcor, a leader in responsible packaging. This exciting partnership aims to tackle real-life challenges in consumer packaging while also giving students hands-on learning and career growth opportunities.
Starting in Spring 2026, a semester-long project will unite USI students and faculty with Amcor experts to create innovative packaging solutions. This effort, organized by USI’s Center for Applied Research, will involve seven dedicated students and four faculty mentors with support from industry professionals at Amcor.
USI President Steven J. Bridges emphasized the importance of this collaboration. “We serve as an engine of innovation for businesses in our region. This partnership is an example of how we can help tackle complex challenges while tapping into the expertise of our students and faculty,” he said.
Students from various disciplines—like engineering, marketing, and art—will work together to develop a specific packaging concept. Throughout the project, they’ll regularly meet with Amcor specialists to brainstorm and refine their ideas. Amcor leaders will even review their final presentations and provide valuable feedback.
Bill Norman, President of Amcor Rigid Packaging Solutions North America, highlighted the mutual benefits: “We’re always looking for fresh ideas. This partnership helps us enhance our packaging innovations while preparing the future workforce in the Evansville area.”
Amcor has deep ties to the Evansville community, not only employing many USI alumni but also actively supporting education and economic development. Their commitment to fostering local talent is evident in their work in the area and partnerships with institutions like USI.
This collaboration stands out as a powerful model for industry and academia, paving the way for students to gain practical experience and develop real-world solutions. With job opportunities in sustainable packaging growing—set to reach $300 billion by 2028—students are stepping into a rapidly evolving workforce. This partnership not only nurtures student potential but also strengthens regional economic prospects.
Through this project, USI and Amcor aim to create a dynamic intersection of education, innovation, and community growth, giving students the tools they need to succeed in their future careers. The dual focus on sustainability and practical application makes this venture particularly timely in today’s market.
