ATLANTA – Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is set to leave the U.S. Postal Service after leading it for over four years. His time in office has been filled with controversy, mainly due to issues like mail delays and cost-cutting measures, as reported by Politico. With his departure, the agency awaits new leadership, especially important as we approach a presidential election and concerns about mail delivery continue.
DeJoy, who has been at the helm since June 2020, has asked the USPS board to find his replacement. His leadership focused on a 10-year plan aimed at cutting billions in costs to ensure the Postal Service’s long-term financial health. Still, he faced bipartisanship backlash for issues like delayed mail, blocked access to postal facilities, and disputes over mail-in voting during the 2020 election.
Before becoming Postmaster General, DeJoy was a logistics executive and a significant fundraiser for Donald Trump. His appointment raised alarms among Democrats who feared it would hinder mail delivery during a crucial election. Throughout his tenure, he has sparked strong opinions; many Democrats pushed for his removal, but he has maintained his position under President Joe Biden, as the president does not have the power to remove a postmaster general directly.
Now, with DeJoy’s exit, there’s speculation about how Trump’s influence might return to the USPS leadership.
Sen. Jon Ossoff, a major critic of DeJoy from Georgia, highlighted ongoing mail delays affecting families, businesses, and veterans. He hopes the next postmaster general will restore reliable service for everyone — particularly for those relying on essential mail like medication and appointment notices.
Last month, Ossoff initiated an inquiry to demand timely deliveries from USPS and put forth the Postmaster General Reform Act of 2024, which aims to align the appointment of the postmaster general with other executive roles, requiring presidential appointment and Senate confirmation.
The USPS Board of Governors will soon begin searching for DeJoy’s successor. The next leader will face significant challenges, including financial struggles and the need to regain public trust in mail services. As the selection process unfolds, postal customers and employees are keenly interested in who will guide the agency into its next chapter.
