India is working hard to protect its agriculture sector in trade talks with the United States. This has made negotiations challenging, with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer calling India a “tough nut to crack.”
Recently, a 12-member Indian delegation wrapped up three days of discussions with US officials, led by Darpan Jain from the Department of Commerce. The aim is to formalize a trade deal first outlined in February.
Greer noted that India has a long history of protecting its agricultural markets. He mentioned that while both sides have specific interests to protect, there are areas for possible agreement, like distillers dried grains (DDGs).
India is also looking for better access to US markets. Both countries hope to boost trade to $500 billion by 2030. In 2025, trade between India and the US reached $149.4 billion. The US exported goods worth $45.6 billion to India, while India sent goods worth $103.8 billion the other way.
The trade agreement is crucial but complicated. A recent setback occurred when the US Supreme Court ruled that tariffs imposed by former President Trump were unconstitutional, casting uncertainty on the deal’s framework.
In today’s global market, these discussions are vital. According to a recent Pew Research study, strengthening trade ties can lead to economic growth for both nations. While the outcome remains uncertain, both countries share a common goal: a thriving trade relationship.
