SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Health and Human Services faced a setback this year, losing nearly $50 million in drug rebates due to a technical mistake. This happened after they switched to a new system for processing Medicaid claims.
Recently, the department announced that it has recovered $36 million so far. They’re optimistic about collecting the entire $49.2 million by the end of the year.
The issue arose in April 2023 during the switch to a system called Prism. While this transition aimed to modernize state healthcare, it mistakenly caused some data not to be reported to drug manufacturers. In response, the department has implemented a permanent fix and improved monitoring processes to protect taxpayer funds.
The commitment to better management means taxpayers can expect more accountability in how Medicaid funds are handled. They don’t foresee any further issues in recovering the lost money and will continue to work closely with Utah’s auditor for updates.
