Utah’s 2026 Congressional Redistricting: Judge’s Order Sparks Controversial Map Changes

A Utah judge has ruled that the state must redraw its congressional districts. This decision comes after lawmakers overturned a ballot measure that aimed to limit partisan gerrymandering. Now, Utah is faced with a crucial change as the country gears up for the 2026 midterm elections.

In 2020, however, the Legislature passed a law that weakened these reforms. Judge Dianna M. Gibson stated that the Legislature “intentionally stripped away” the key aspects of the 2018 measure. She emphasized that redistricting isn’t just about drawing lines; it impacts democracy and voter representation.

Gibson found that the Legislature acted unconstitutionally and has blocked future elections from proceeding under the current congressional map. She has ordered lawmakers to create a new map within 30 days, adhering to the original guidelines set by voters.

Historically, Utah leans heavily Republican, with Trump winning by a significant margin in the last election. However, Salt Lake County, which makes up over a third of the state’s population, has a more Democratic leaning, having supported Vice President Kamala Harris. This division in political opinion within the state highlights the ongoing importance of fair districting.

As redistricting gains attention across the country, experts warn of its significant consequences.
