The University of Virginia (UVA) is moving forward in its search for a new president. The search committee has narrowed down more than 60 candidates to a select few who will participate in in-person interviews this month.
John Isaacson, chair of the search firm Isaacson, Miller, spoke to committee members, noting that interest in the position has surged recently. This rise in applicants follows a key agreement UVA reached with the U.S. Department of Justice, which some had worried might deter potential candidates. “Surprisingly, the opposite is true,” Isaacson said, adding that the last ten days saw a wave of new candidates eager to apply.
He emphasized that UVA is standing out in a challenging time for higher education. Despite the pressures many institutions face, UVA remains attractive to candidates, more so than many competing schools currently conducting similar searches. This speaks volumes about the University’s strong reputation.
Rachel Sheridan, rector of the Board of Visitors, confirmed that the candidate pool features prominent leaders from respected institutions across the nation. The search process follows tried-and-true methods that Isaacson’s firm has applied successfully at colleges and universities elsewhere.
Sheridan expressed gratitude to committee members for the countless hours they have devoted to the search. They conducted 39 listening sessions and analyzed over 1,300 survey comments from the university community to ensure they find the best candidate.
In a recent closed meeting, the committee trimmed the list of applicants further. The upcoming interviews will be held in a confidential setting to protect the privacy of the candidates.
This ongoing search highlights a critical moment for UVA. As higher education faces shifting challenges, the selection of strong leadership is crucial. Recent statistics show that more than 50% of university presidents report feeling unprepared for challenges during their terms, according to a survey by the American Council on Education. This makes finding the right leader even more vital, as they need to navigate both immediate and long-term issues effectively.
The committee’s careful approach aims to produce a shortlist of outstanding candidates for the Board of Visitors to consider. The board will ultimately decide who will lead the University forward, shaping its future in an evolving educational landscape.
