The University of West Alabama has appointed Dr. Amy H. Jones as its new provost, a key role that oversees all academic activities at the university.
Dr. Jones has been acting as interim provost since October 2025. During this time, she has focused on enhancing academic operations and driving initiatives that support both faculty and students. Her work has led to significant improvements in infrastructure and hands-on learning experiences.
UWA President Dr. Todd G. Fritch praised her leadership, noting, “Dr. Jones has shown remarkable dedication to UWA’s mission. Her experience and vision will help Academic Affairs continue to grow as we pursue the strategic goals of the university.”
As interim provost, Jones spearheaded several initiatives aimed at improving academic and student life. She formed task forces to tackle issues like advising, artificial intelligence policies, faculty workloads, and commencement planning. These efforts have equipped the university to make informed, data-driven decisions.
Dr. Jones shared her enthusiasm for her new role, saying, “My nearly 20 years at the University of West Alabama have deepened my appreciation for our impact on students and the community. Education can truly transform lives, and I look forward to working with everyone to enhance our academic excellence and expand opportunities.”
Dr. Jones began her journey at UWA in 2007 as an instructor and has since held various leadership roles, culminating in her recent position as dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Throughout her career, she has actively participated in committees focused on both faculty and student success.
Her educational background includes a doctorate in communication and information science from The University of Alabama, a Master of Science in sport administration from the University of Louisville, and a Bachelor of Arts in film, theatre, and communication arts from the University of New Orleans.
According to a recent survey by the American Association of Colleges and Universities, effective leadership in academic settings can significantly enhance student outcomes. With her extensive experience and commitment, Dr. Jones is well-prepared to lead UWA into a brighter future.
Every step Dr. Jones takes will not only impact the university but also play a role in enriching the wider community. Engaging with local partners and focusing on student needs is crucial for campus growth, especially in today’s fast-paced educational landscape.
